firefighters scramble this evening to contain fires on both sides of the bay. good evening i'm heather holmes. >> and i'm frank somerville. paul chambers is in meyer island. but we begin in santa clara with cristina rendon she's at a charity that's asking for help tonight after a fire destroyed a lot of their donations. cristina. >> reporter: well, there's still one fire truck here keeping an eye on things but

once that the dust has settled here's a look at the rubble left behind. leaving this charity with a lot to clean up. >> reporter: black plumes of smoke filled the sky in santa clara. >> you could hear some crackling. it looked pretty intense. >> reporter: as dozens of donated items went up in flames. >> they told us to stay in the building and not to come into this area. >> reporter: the fire started in a donation bin behind hope services. a nonprofit organization that helps people with development disabilities in the south bay. flames quickly spread to three trucks filled with clothes and clothing itemses. >> they use these trucks to collect items from people around the bay area.

>> reporter: a hope center spokesperson said that several people made a heroic attempt to save these trucks. fire crews had flames under control within an hour but they still don't know how the fire started. >> nothing we would describe as suspicious just under investigation right now. until we can determine a point of origin and a cause. >> reporter: a former volunteer we spoke to said it is sad to see so many donations destroyed. but hopes to help out. >> they do really good things for the community. >> reporter: a spokeswoman for hope services says they don't know the extent of items lost but they hope that bay area residents will donate to help replace what they did lose. >> from cristina in the south bay we go to paul chambers in

the north bay. >> reporter: within the past 20 to 30 minutes they cleared the scene in front of me. you can see lights where crews continue to come out. they are continuing to monitor that for flair ups. news chopper2 was overhead as they fought the fire. >> there's washers, dryers, propane tank, there's water heaters. it's anything and everything in the pile. >> reporter: at this time the cause is unknown. although investigators say workers do a lot of welding in the yard. so it's unclear what chemical went up in flames. >> we did some air monitoring and picked up a couple parts per million of chemicals in the

air. >> reporter: for that reason, the hazmat team was called in. as a precaution, a shelter in place was issued. crews battled a four alarm fire. the cause of it is still unknown. crews say there's been very little improvements to buildings in the area which makes the job of fighting fires in the island that much tougher. >> they haven't done repairs for 15 years on the building. they are just tinderbox, when they burn they burn very fast. >> reporter: another reason that makes it hard to fight the fire is the lack of water. paul chambers, ktvu. now to fairfield where two veteran police officers are under investigation for

trolling the internet for dating while at work. they're also accused of using confidential data bases to screen the woman they found appealing. supervisors were first alerted on the allegations against ruiz and glashob. both spent hours on dating websites such as tinder, e harmony. >> abuse of their power. like using it for their own personal gain. >> reporter: the fairfield officers reportedly used a police issued computer to look up the women on a confidential law enforcement data base that connects to the dmv and state and federal records. for now both men remain assigned to their regular duties. new at 10:00, we're getting a close look at a senator

taking a sobriety test. >> the officer contacted the driver who was displaying signs of intoxication. he then performed a driving under the influence evaluation. >> hueso was charged with dui officers did not reveal his blood alcohol level. he is the fourth state representative to be arrested this year. the other three have all been suspended from office. also new at 10:00, the new 77-year-old co-owner of a petaluma slaughter pled guilty to selling diseased meat from 101 condemned cows and 71 cows

that had eye cancer. workers at the slaughter house waiteding in inspectors were on lunch breaks to process the diseased meats. we now know the names of two men found dead in adjacent backyards. the case appears to be a murder suicide. the coroner's office identified the men at 61-year-old theodore rod of mill valley and andreas crydon. a rifle was also found near his body. danville police announced the arrest today of a 58-year- old middle school math teacher on suspicion of possessing child pornography. as ktvu's mike mibach reports school officials and parents at diablo vista middle school are

having trouble believing the charges. >> reporter: a 12 year veteran math teacher named mitchell wolf. her daughters have been through his class. >> he loves what he does. he finds what the children like. >> it's shocking news, sad news to hear about the allegations. >> reporter: san ramon valley unified district spokesperson, says wolf most recently thought eighth grade advanced math. >> at this point we have no reason to believe that any of our students are involved past or present. >> reporter: wolf's arrest came after an investigation by the task force. >> i think there's more to it. you know he's a very important

family member in this community as well as a teacher and i think there's more to it. >> reporter: and danville police also say once wolf was arrested he was transported to the county jail in martinez where at last check he was being held on a million dollars bail. the school district says that wolf is now on paid administrative leave. reporting here in danville, mike mibach. the world health organization expressed concern there could be a quote invisible case load of people infected with the often deadly ebola virus. there are ebola patients going undetected in west africa. the organization points to clinics that recently opened in liberia and were immediately overwhelmed by ebola patients who had not been previously identified. 1,300 patients have died. lawyers for the accused boston marathon bomber filed a motion asking the judge to

dismiss the inindictment siting concerns over the selection of the jury. dzhokhar tsarnaev and his brother planted the bombs that exploded at the marathon's finish line. now tsarnaev's attorney says there were substantial violations in the selection of grand juries in boston between 2011 and 2013 including the grand jury that handed down the inindictment against tsarnaev. specifically the lawyers say african americans and people over 70 were under represented on the jury. a play written and performed by a bay area officer. >> i wrote the play two years ago and we're here again. >> the change he hope it will help inspire. >> i'm tracking changes, when you will feel the warmest weather at your house. >> the entire field was ripped out at levi's stadium now it's a race against the clock to

levi stadium went from green grass to brown dirt. early this morning crews started installing a new field. they put down roll after roll of grass throughout the day and when news chopper 2 was back over the field around 5:30 tonight they were nearly done. the field will be ready in time for the kick off against the

chargers on sunday. ktvu's anne rubin tells us how the new turf will be slightly different. >> reporter: at levi stadium rolls of it are going in. double cut extra thick sod. and coach jim harbaugh says he's confident it'll be ready for game time. >> our organization, we can always count on them to do things at the highest level. >> reporter: just yesterday, the 49ers tore up their entire field after concerns it wasn't safe for players. west coast turf has been handling the field there and has been asked not to comment. >> as i understand it the sand is not holding the way it's supposed to and that's giving way to the turf. >> reporter: the heavier thicker sod being installed now will offer more stability. >> there's more to go ahead and

and then for postgame spins, sports director mark ibanez hosts the point. a bay area football team is playing on big screens. the film is based on the 12 year, 151 game winning streak at delasalle team in concord. the team was number one in the nation. the movie accurately conveys the message he tried to send to his players of giving everything you've got both on the field and in life. the movie also focused on the killing of terrance kelly and how it brought the team together. kelly was a former player who was murdered in richmond just one day before he was set to leave on a full scholarship to play for the oregon ducks. the city of oakland released a draft plan and

environmental impact report for its proposal to redevelop the area around the oakland coliseum. the plan calls for a sports and retail business. a new football stadium, baseball park and basketball arena are included. go to our website ktvu.com and click on web links for more information. the family of a san francisco man who was killed by a police officer filed a lawsuit against the stipin federal court today. david stevenson explains why they say this is a case of excessive use of force. >> reporter: cries for justice, where nieto was shot to death after allegedly points a taser after police officers. >> we know the truth,

alejandro nieto never pointed a taser. that is a flat out lie. >> reporter: for the filing of a civil rights lawsuit. the nieto family and supporters have also called for a federal investigation and say the facts of the case are being held back by local police and prosecutors. >> what do we want? >> justice. >> reporter: that is why we need to go to the federal court and they will have a much stricter calendar and guidelines that san francisco must follow. >> reporter: police chief greg suhr said officers responding to 911 calls about a man with a gunshot nieto after he aimed the taser red light at them. new evidence and new witnesses will show nieto a security guard knew better than to challenge armed officers. >> he was told to stop. as he made a minor minor move

he was shot multiple times. his body was racked with bullets. >> reporter: the police department says they're waiting on the medical examiners report to continue their investigation. the police department tells us it is deferring comment until it has had time to study the reviews. dog lovers are celebrating after governor brown signed a bill that makes it legal for dogs to join their neighbors in certain california restaurants. under the measure dogs can be in an outdoor dining section while on leash as long as food is not prepared in that area. it is still up to the city to determine where the space is set apart for the dogs. the law goes into effect january 1st. the marine layer is going to squeak up a few feet or a few 100 feet that's going to allow more cool air for

tomorrow. temperatures on your saturday slightly cooler than today. you're not even going to notice it it's going to be very subtle differences. i have fog, all the way over to the east bay. which is moving pretty quickly for this time of night. livermore valley right now, so fog tomorrow morning for pretty much everybody when you wake up. burns off, pretty quickly. and then temperature s go right to where they were today. numbers mainly in the 70s and mid-80s for daytime highs. as you go through the bay area microclimates tomorrow you have those 70s out in the east bay and you get over the east bay hills and there you go you're in the mid-70s, upper 70s and low and mid-80s. those are the highs tomorrow. a little cooler than today. even in the hot spots, sunday we talk about a warm up. back here at 10:45. we'll go looking for the warm up. sunday it warms up and temperatures get into the mid- 90s. we'll dial all that in for you. there's a slight chance for showers coming up. not in the five day but in the 10 day forecast.

♪ officials at the richmond san rafael bridge are taking some responsibility for a massive traffic jam during this morning's commute. the bay area toll authority eliminated one of the four weekday cash only lanes at the toll plaza triggering delays. ktvu's john fowler looks at the problem and learned what could be good news for frustrated commuters. >> it looked nasty from above these pictures from chopper 2

this morning. and even worse from in the backed up traffic. >> it was a tough morning from the toll plaza west heading toward marin county. >> reporter: fast track lanes moving fine but cash lanes almost a standstill. budget cuts are closing one cash lane each friday. >> i think it's ridiculous. it makes no sense. seriously. i mean people trying to get to work. >> reporter: transportation officials say back ups have only been bad the last two fridays. still many drivers we talked to say these cuts amount to poor customer service. >> the more people that can come through the better experience you're going to have. the more people will want to use that bridge other than i can move around. some say the toll booth is there just put a toll taker in

it. four months ago it cut several million dollars from the caltrans toll taker budget eliminating one part timer from fridays. a spokesperson today said the authority now recognizes the disruption it's causing. >> we know how bad the traffic is that people are suffering. it's not like they're suffering in silence, okay. we know. we'll review it. >> reporter: the toll authority says that there's one simple fix, get a toll tag. but they will be hiring a part time person next friday improving the traffic. the bill authored by mark desalle grew out of questions over spending and oversight during the construction of the eastern is span of the bay bridge. the bill requires administering agencies of transportation projects of a billion dollars

or more to establish both a peer review group and comprehensive management plan. another bill would require prisons to develop a five year plan to make condoms available to inmates. the bill was authored by rob bontof of oakland as a way to reduce the transmission of hiv aids and other sexually transmitted diseases. a study found the prevalence of aids in state and federal prisons was three times greater than in the general population. some critics have said handing out condoms would encourage inmates to break the law since it is a felony to have sex in prison. the redwood city school district announced today that it's getting more than a million dollars from a charitable organization that was created by mark zuckerbergberg zuckerbergberg -- zuckerberg and his wife. it was set up this year. most of the $1.6 million is

there is a sense of calm in ferguson missouri tonight after almost two weeks of sometimes violent protests. this as funeral arrangements for 18-year-old michael brown are being planned. his family is hoping there will be no violence at the service on monday. a large crowd is expected at the funeral along with a strong security presence. and a crowd funded web page created for the officer who shot and killed michael brown has stopped accepting donations. the site raised more than $235,000 for darren wilson reaching the organizers goal in just four days. the site says all of the proceeds will be sent directly to wilson for any financial needs he may have including legal fees. and here in the bay area, a sheriff deputy is sharing his

ferguson is no one is listening to the other. >> reporter: he says until both the black community and the police start listening to each other it's likely officer involved shootings of young black men will continue to happen. >> i'm a rapper from west oakland, i went to berkeley schools, i wrote a play and i'm a cop. >> reporter: parker says he was a professional rapper who attended a protest after oscar grant's protest. that inspired him to become a cop. >> i've been stopped before, i've been harassed before. >> what we don't talk about is the racial profiling of american citizens. because someone calls the police. >> reporter: he hopes his play will reach a broad audience. >> for the first time in my life i feel the art i'm creating is actually reaching the demographic that i want to reach. >> reporter: his demographic piper wants to reach everyone

james foley is questioning the policy of the unite not to pay ransom. >> reporter: many experts say that demand was not a serious officer given that isis ransom is two to $3 million to other countries. the militant group isis sent an e-mail to his family dated august 12. it read you and your citizens will pay the price of your bombings. the first is the blood of james foley. he will be executed for your transsessions against us. isis demanded $432 million a price the u.s. government would not pay. >> you do not make concessions

coming to california. his visit comes less than a month after governor brown went to mexico. president enrique pena nieto is set to address millions of people. governor brown will hold a luncheon in sacramento. california lawmakers took action on two gun related bills today. the state senate unanimously passed legislation that requires local law enforcement agencies to encourage officer to research who has guns. police in isle of vista contacted the gunman but didn't know he owned weapons. that bill now heads to governor brown. in the assembly members have approved a bill to track ammunition by requiring sellers to be licensed and buyers to pass background checks. that bill passed on a vote of 42-26 and now heads to the

the city is spending on improvements. >> it's just kind of overgrown and stuff and it's not very wide or feels very safe. the traffic is kind of crazy. >> it's not very well lit. and it's very, easy to trip over things. >> reporter: the city says $3.6 million will help pay for a bicycle and pedestrian path along mcarthur boulevard from high street to seminary. 2-1/2 million dollars is slated for pedestrian lighting and sidewalk repair on international boulevard. city leaders say they expect the projects to take about two years. indy cars this weekend that means there could be big traffic jams. this video is from last year's go proindy car grand prix. the main race is sunday but practice started today. folks heading to the track on highway 37 or 121 can expect some mayor delays. a sacramento man says pine needles saved his life when he found himself lost in the sierra for five days.

mike vilhower says he just wanted to catch some fish when he headed out to the mountains in alpine county a week ago. he said when nothing was biting he went out for in search of cricketing hoping that would be a better bait. that's when he got lost. >> when i would walk up a ridge i would think there's the lake, and there would be nothing. >> reporter: he made a shelter out of pine needles. when he saw a helicopter overhead, he wrote out the word help in pine needles. the searchers rescued him and informed him there were no fish

we received some interesting video about a viewer about what happened to him at a gas station. he said he's worried that a station is taking advantage of drives -- of drivers by charges them for gas they didn't pump. >> reporter: a viewer posted

this video on our facebook page wondering if there's a ghost in the pump or something else going on. no gas has been pumped up by the price on the meter keeps going up. >> the pump really needs, it shouldn't have that creep in there. it is a failure and it should be held off sale. >> reporter: that doesn't mean there's something a foul. >> there's a whole lot of different aspects that could happen in the gas pump with the -- there's about four or five different mechanisms in there that could cause the creep. >> reporter: the video shows pump number five at this low priced oakley arco. the station had already taken it out of service. no surprise to weights commission which says such issues come up only five times a year. in fact, two investigates reviewed 56 contra costa county complaints filed june of this year going back 18 months. only two resulted in shutting

a lesson in saving lives. >> take her out that front seat. >> she is breathing. >> you're good. >> reporter: crews for the alameda sheriff department used a jaws of life during a training exercise learning how to conduct rescues. a local wrecking yard donated 25 vehicles to the fire department and volunteers acted as potential victims. one firefighters even employed his talent with make up to make the events look real. >> reporter: they say the training is crucial to saving lives. highs today were a lot like yesterdays which will be a lot like tomorrows. but sunday will be slightly warmer and the next week as we get into monday, tuesday and wednesday we're back into the mid-90s. it's going to warm up quite a
